Within the framework of a cooperation agreement concluded with the Hungarian Heraldic and Genealogical Society (MHGT), the Hungarian Heritage Archives Foundation supported the publication of the journal Turul. The primary reason for this support is that the majority of the documents acquired by the Foundation through its document-rescue activities have thus far been donated to the Hungarian National Archives. Since 2010, the Department of Private Archives of the National Archives has published annual reports in Turul on the growth of its family-history collections. Consequently, the scholarly community becomes acquainted with the documents donated by the Foundation to the archives primarily through these reports.
The journal, founded in 1883, originally drew the greater part of its source material from the former archives of the Hungarian National Museum, which collected exclusively private records and family archives. This so-called Archival Department was incorporated into the National Archives in 1934 as the culmination of a longer institutional process. Thereafter, responsibility for the management of family collections and the archival holdings formerly preserved by the museum passed to the National Archives. As early as 1908, Turul began publishing reports on additions to the museum archives’ collection of armorial charters. From 1924 onwards, notices concerning acquisitions to the collection as a whole appeared regularly in the journal. Beginning in 1935, reports on the expansion of family archival holdings were published under the title Official Bulletin on the Accessions of the Royal Hungarian National Archives; this series continued until 1948, shortly before the journal itself ceased publication in 1950. This long-standing tradition was revived in 2010 by the new editorial board through the publication of annual accession reports.
Turul, therefore, serves as the principal scholarly forum for the publication of documents acquired by the Hungarian Heritage Archives Foundation. The Foundation supported the publication of issues 1 and 2 of the 2024 volume, as well as issue 4 of the 2025 volume. The latter included the scholarly study devoted to the fragment of the Czobor family archives rescued by the Foundation.
